Powerful magic indeed, but I've run into similar before. Not that it helps at all in this situation, we're not strong enough to fight it as it is at home either.
How did it work? The similar magic you encountered. Where I'm from, it's - there are some things that can't be reversed. Or at least, we haven't found a way yet. Entropy, the flow of time - you might be able to pause them, but you can't wind them back.
I think maybe the problem is that I don't understand how it works, exactly. Just that we very much need to stop it, because as you said, there are some things that simply can't be reversed.
But this is the power to rewrite everything. Everyone's stories. Or simply erase them. Be done with it. Some think simple oblivion is better than living the same story over and over.
