that hits the nail on the head, exactly what about this made her so desperately sad. she liked rin a lot; he tried to act like a big brother and he made her feel accepted and happy. but more than anything, she liked these two people from another world, who worried about who was best about swimming and who had the cutest mascot and whether they would follow their dreams.
that's not the sort of world she's lived in for a long time. but for a little while, they invited her to feel like part of it. and that was precious, and she wanted to guard it, but it all shattered so quickly.]
I wish he didn't have to be, either. I wish it could have stayed like it was this past week.
[ he hadn't expected to get attached to that idea himself. but then again, maybe he shouldn't be so shocked. it's exactly why he had made the deal with the baba yaga. for a chance to give someone else her story, to let her write it the way she wanted it to be, and it's something similar here too. he's never thought of himself as an optimist - a pessimist who specializes in denial at best - but he wanted to be. for a while. ]

[ this is really the most he can probably hope for - or manage to actually be able to get across in one night. but it is true, they do manage to somehow find a way to laugh even through the worst of it. also, bullying gerard really brings people together, that can be relied on. ]
